Meaning of 'katavatu'

(kataven, katavay or katavai etc.) def. v. added to the inf. of other verbs. It expresses 1. the duty (katamai) of doing something as in ceyyakkataven, I am bound to do so; 2. desire or the optative as ceyyak katavar, --katavar, may he do so. Note: aka (akavum) may be added as in ceyyakkatavaraka, may he do, ceyyak katavenaka, I bind myself to do it.

(கடவேன், கடவாய் or கடவை etc.) def. v. added to the inf. of other verbs. It expresses 1. the duty (கடமை) of doing something as in செய்யக்கடவேன், I am bound to do so; 2. desire or the optative as செய்யக் கடவார், --கடவர், may he do so. Note: ஆக (ஆகவும்) may be added as in செய்யக்கடவாராக, may he do, செய்யக் கடவேனாக, I bind myself to do it.
